Best Free Face Shape Detectors in 2026, Compared

Last checked: November 1, 2026

For a quick label with hair, glasses and beard tips, most free tools below will do. If you want to see how confident the result is, choose one that shows a confidence or a match for every shape. If you care where your photo goes, read the exact privacy wording. If you want to understand why you got a shape, choose a tool that publishes its rules.

Disclosure: we make one of these tools, FacialRatio’s face shape detector. Facts about the other tools are quoted from their own home pages, checked on November 1, 2026; features and prices can change, so check before you rely on them. We list where our tool is weaker, too. Your photo never leaves your device on FacialRatio.

Quick picks

  • Quick label with styling tips: DetectMyFaceShape, which states a confidence score and tips for hair, glasses and beards.
  • A blended result: whatsmyfaceshape.org, which presents a blended result and says no bar is a medical probability.
  • More than face shape, including a side photo: Glowometry, which accepts front or side-profile photos.
  • Facial ratios rather than a shape label: FaceRatios.com, which lists 13+ measurements.
  • A match for all seven shapes, with the rules published: FacialRatio, which shows every shape’s match, the runner-up and the four measurements behind them.

“Not stated” means the home page didn’t say, not that the tool lacks it. The Face Report did not load when we checked, so it is not listed.

What to look for

  1. How many shapes it chooses from. A tool without an “oblong” category will put long faces somewhere else.
  2. Whether it shows its confidence. A match for every shape, or at least a runner-up, tells you when a result is borderline.
  3. The exact privacy promise. “Processed in your browser” and “never uploaded” are stronger than “never stored”.
  4. Photo guidance. Good tools ask for a straight-on photo at eye level, hair off the face and a neutral expression, because each of these changes the ratios.
  5. Whether the rules are visible. When two tools disagree, published thresholds are the only way to see why.

Why two detectors disagree

Most of these tools find landmarks on the face and compare a few ratios: face length to width, and the widths of the forehead, cheekbones and jaw. They differ in the number of categories, in where the face “starts” (landmark models can’t see the hairline, so some measure from the upper forehead), and in the thresholds that turn ratios into a label. A phone held close to the face exaggerates the centre and shrinks the sides, and a slight head turn narrows one side. Take two or three photos the same way and look at the top two shapes each time.

Where FacialRatio is strong, and where it is not

  • Strong: every weight and threshold is on the methodology page, the measurement engine is open source, the same photo always gives the same numbers, and you see a match for all seven shapes.
  • Weaker: it needs a front-facing photo and doesn’t measure jaw angle or chin projection from the side.
  • Weaker: its shape prototypes haven’t been calibrated on a labelled set of photos yet, so treat the shape as a closest match.
  • Weaker: styling notes for glasses, hair and facial hair are text in the paid report; it doesn’t preview hairstyles or glasses on your face.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free face shape detector?

Yes. Every tool on this page has a free face shape result, and none of them asks for an account on its home page. FacialRatio is free too; only its optional full report with all 58 measurements costs $9.90, once.

Do face shape detectors upload my photo?

It depends on the tool, so read its exact wording. Several now say the photo is processed in your browser and never leaves the device. “Never stored” is a different promise from “never uploaded”: a photo can be sent to a server and deleted afterwards.

Why did two tools give me different face shapes?

Usually because they choose from different sets of shapes (six or seven), measure face length from different starting points, use different thresholds, or got a slightly different photo. Faces that sit between two shapes flip most easily, which is why a match for every shape is more useful than a single label.

Can ChatGPT tell my face shape from a photo?

It can look at an uploaded photo and give an impression, and your photo is then sent to its servers. It does not show the measurements behind the answer, so the same photo can get different answers. A dedicated detector measures the same ratios every time and, in some tools, shows the rules it used.
